DENVER, CO – Today, the Stapleton campaign released the below statement while Congressman Jared Polis tours the Western Slope to push his single-payer, Bernie Sanders-style healthcare proposal on Coloradans:
“Coloradans on the Western Slope pay some of the highest premiums in the country under Obamacare that Congressman Polis has continually voted to keep in place. Now, Congressman Polis wants to double-down on government-run healthcare and force a Bernie Sanders-style system on Coloradans that will raise taxes and decrease choice,” said Stapleton for Colorado spokesman Jerrod Dobkin. “Congressman Polis chooses to ignore the fact that 80 percent of Colorado voters rejected this type of radical, single-payer healthcare system less than two years ago because it would have taken an additional $25 billion from taxpayers annually and driven jobs and businesses out of the state. Walker is committed to instituting reforms that will actually fix our healthcare system and bring about real relief to Coloradans that can’t afford the out-of-control costs of Obamacare.”
Background:
- The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported on the outcome single-payer healthcare could have had on the Western slope back in 2016, saying, “such a measure also would harm rural regions such as Club 20’s area, which includes most of the Western Slope and southern Colorado, because it would tend to concentrate health care services in urban areas, forcing rural residents to travel to obtain services, Schwenke said.”
- Governor John Hickenlooper opposed single-payer healthcare for Colorado in 2016, saying, “…it would be premature to dramatically remake our healthcare system at this time.”
